Grades 4-6: Engineering Rockets and Rovers - Week 4
Grade: 4-6
Duration: 45 minutes
Topic: Boost Your Knowledge
Overview
Students explore how different rocket variables such as length, width, and material impact rocket performance.
Objective
- Test different rocket variables to understand their impact.
- Use data to make informed decisions about rocket design.
- Reflect on collaboration and sharing knowledge for the common good.
Materials
- Rocket materials, measuring tools, Engineering Journals, Chromebook/iPad.
Lesson Steps
1. Opening Prayer (5 minutes)
Begin with a prayer asking for guidance and wisdom in our learning and engineering journey.
Suggested Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for the wonders of creation and for giving us the ability to explore and understand it. Help us use our knowledge to care for Your world. Amen.”
2. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Discussion: Discuss how changing rocket variables affects their performance.
- Connection to Faith: Relate the Catholic value of collaboration and sharing knowledge for the benefit of others, inspired by St. Paul’s teachings.
3. Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Activity: Students test different rocket variables, record data, and share their findings with the class.
- Catholic Integration: Reflect on how collaboration and shared knowledge can improve the common good.
4. Reflection & Sharing (5 minutes)
- Activity: Students reflect on the importance of teamwork and shared knowledge in engineering.
- Sharing: Discuss how teamwork helps engineers solve complex problems.
Catholic Integration
- Faith Connection: Working together and sharing knowledge to improve outcomes for the community.
Assessment
- Participation: Observe how well students work in teams to test and analyze rocket variables..
- Reflection: Assess students’ understanding of their understanding of teamwork and sharing knowledge in engineering..
Closing Prayer (2 minutes)
End the lesson with a prayer thanking God for the opportunity to learn and explore.
Suggested Prayer:
“Thank You, God, for this time of learning. May we always seek to use our knowledge to do good in Your world. Amen.”
